Question 1

Do I need a license to charter a catamaran?

Accepted Answer

For a bareboat charter you need a valid sailing license, and many bases also ask for a VHF radio certificate — which certificates are accepted depends on the country you sail in. Every listing states whether a license is required, and you can filter search results by it. Without one you can still go: book a skippered or crewed catamaran and a professional captain comes with the boat.

Question 2

I have never sailed before. Can I still book?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Filter for skippered or crewed charters and an experienced captain sails the catamaran for you; crewed boats can also come with a hostess or cook. Skipper fees are quoted per day and normally exclude the crew's food, which is standard practice across the Mediterranean.

Question 3

What kinds of catamarans can I charter?

Accepted Answer

Sailing and power catamarans from about 38 to 58 feet (11–18 m), most with 3 to 6 cabins for up to 12 guests — bareboat, skippered or fully crewed. Every listing shows the layout, cabins and heads, equipment, year of build and the base it sails from, so you can compare like for like.

Question 4

How much does a catamaran charter cost?

Accepted Answer

Prices are per week and depend mainly on the season, the size and age of the catamaran, and whether a crew is included. As a guide: from around €2,000 per week for a smaller catamaran in low season, €3,000–8,000 for most boats in the main season, and €15,000 or more for large or fully crewed yachts in peak weeks. Early-bird and last-minute discounts are shown directly on the listing, and any mandatory extras are listed before you book.

Question 5

What is included in the price?

Accepted Answer

The price covers the catamaran with its standard equipment and insurance, plus the crew fee on skippered and crewed charters. Costs such as fuel, final cleaning, tourist tax, transit log, and optional gear are handled as extras — each listing shows them individually and marks which ones are mandatory.

Question 6

When do I pay, and how much?

Accepted Answer

You pay a first installment to confirm the booking and the balance before departure. On most catamarans that is 30% at booking and 70% due 30 days before check-in, though owners can set other schedules. The exact amounts and due dates are always shown before you enter any payment details.

Question 7

How does the security deposit work?

Accepted Answer

Most catamarans require a refundable security deposit, shown on the listing and settled directly with the charter operator at check-in — we do not charge it when you book. It is returned after check-out if the boat is handed back undamaged, and many operators offer a damage waiver that lowers or replaces it.

Question 8

Why can my charter only start on certain days?

Accepted Answer

Charters run base to base, so each catamaran has its own permitted check-in days. Saturday is the classic changeover day in the Mediterranean, but many boats also accept other days or shorter stays. The date picker only offers the days a boat actually accepts, so any date you can select is a valid start date.

Question 9

Can I cancel or change my booking?

Accepted Answer

Every booking can be cancelled free of charge within 48 hours of being confirmed, with a full refund — unless the trip starts within 30 days, when it is paid in full and non-refundable. After the free window, payments already made are not refunded, and the booking becomes non-refundable once your balance is due. The exact dates are shown at checkout and in your booking. Need different dates? We'll ask the charter company to move your booking.

Question 10

What should I bring on board?

Accepted Answer

Pack light and in soft bags — hard suitcases don't store well on a boat. Bring sun protection (hat, sunglasses, high-factor cream), swimwear, a light windproof layer, shoes with non-slip soles, your ID and, for bareboat charters, your sailing licence and VHF certificate. Seasickness tablets are worth having even if you rarely need them. Bed linen and towels are usually provided and snorkelling gear is often on board — the listing's equipment list tells you what is included, and many bases can pre-stock the boat with provisions if you ask when booking.

Question 11

How do I list my catamaran on Catamaran Book?

Accepted Answer

Use Register your boat in the header to create an owner account — for a single catamaran or a whole fleet — then add photos, prices, seasons and the check-in days you accept. Listing is free: you keep 85% of every confirmed charter, and up to 97% with a subscription. You control your calendar and prices and decide which requests to accept; we handle guest enquiries, payments and payouts. The Owner FAQ covers the details.
